Job Description: Machinist 4 Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns. Prototype Fabrication (PF) is a division consisting of two groups whose mission is to provide machining, welding and life-cycle support to machine tool systems for the Laboratory. Capabilities include Precision Fabrications in a wide variety of materials and sizes; Preventative and Corrective Maintenance; Fabrication Systems Support; and Fabrication Technology and Engineering for machine tool design/development. Located across six technical areas and served by five different FODs, PF manages a diverse machine tooling capability and resources necessary for fabrication and manufacturing in support of multiple programs while adhering to Lab, federal, DOE and state requirements. Detailed Description The selected candidate for this position will provide machining support for the fabrication of components both in a classified and unclassified environment. Specifically, the Machinist will work in a team environment to provide fabrication services for a variety of customers both internal and external to the Laboratory including: Hydrotesting; JTA; Subcrit; LEP; production (NCD); Threat Reduction programs; Pu Sustainment/Pit Manufacturing; Pit Surveillance; and Pu Science Campaign. Fabrications range in size from miniature to very large and include common materials as well as materials with radioactive, toxic, pyrophoric, and/or other hazardous characteristics. The selected candidate must be able to work from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes, EDM and a variety of general machine shop tooling. Job Requirements • Accredited Journey-Person Program Qualified or 15 years in any machine trade discipline, with 5-8 years of diverse machining experience to include both manual and CNC set up and operation. Must have at least 2 years in a prototype fabrication environment. • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications and determine design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts. • Ability to perform precision measurements. • Ability to create manufacturing drawings or sketches for the production of hardware and to analyze and troubleshoot customer-provided drawings and provide recommendations for revision to ensure manufacturability. • Ability to operate manual and powered lifting equipment/devices. • Ability to develop specifications for project implementation and for verifying that the end product meets requirements. • Demonstrated ability to produce parts with a high degree of difficulty and tight tolerances, typically +/- .0005. • Demonstrated effectiveness in communication and teaming with peers, customers, and technicians as appropriate to achieve or negotiate work requirements. • Must be willing to work with hazardous materials. • Must be able to acquire and maintain pertinent certification to support PF fabrication requests such as RAD II, SNI Beryllium awareness, or whatever training is necessary to gain access to all PF facilities. • Must be able to acquire and/or maintain a Q clearance. Notes to Applicants • Applicants should be prepared to describe the difficulty, materials, and tolerances of recently completed fabrication work. • Interviews for this position will include a proficiency “segment” in which applicants will be asked to review and comment on actual fabrication drawings, describing the approach and/or potential difficulties, and describing inspection and measurement techniques needed. The candidate will also be asked to identify typical maintenance needs, and describe safe work practices in a machining environment.
