Consistency.  It is abundantly clear that companies are seeking consistency in their OJT efforts and that is the major asset this program brings them.

Productivity. The program is designed to enable the company’s personnel to effectively transfer skills and knowledge.

Structure.  In addition to consistency, the program brings structure to the company by training their OJT trainers in the following competencies.

Competencies. There are four distinct competencies that the industry agrees need to be mastered for a person to be an effective OJT Trainer:

  • Training Methodology
  • Communication
  • Coaching
  • Adult Learning Behavior

Performance plus Knowledge Examinations.

This program was designed by an Expert Panel drawn nationwide from precision manufacturing companies and piloted nationwide.  The  process was in accord with the NIMS procedures as approved by the American National Standards Institute.

The NIMS OJT Trainer Certification requires the successful completion of three training demonstrations that encompass all the skills in those competencies.  The skill checks are contained in personalized Performance Demonstration Reports (PDRs).  Additionally, the candidates must pass a theory examination proving their knowledge of the competences.

The OJT Trainer Workshop is designed so that the participants are trained, understand and demonstrate a working knowledge and appreciation for each of the competencies.

The first day of the workshop is dedicated to an understanding and appreciation the importance of the four competencies.  This is accomplished through lecture and individual and group exercises.  Each participant is given a personalized manual developed by the NIMS Expert Panel that guides them through the competencies.

During the second today of the workshop, participants demonstrate – and are evaluated on - their abilities though actual training of their peers.   Successful demonstrations will result in the award of two of the three required PDRS.  The third is later obtained at the participant’s company on the shop floor.  In the case where the NIMS training is being conducted for an individual company at the company’s location, the third demonstration may be conducted as part of the workshop.
