Meet the Expert Panel

US Department of Labor : Apprenticeship Training website

Individual company representatives are being sought to participate in a one-day session that will impact on the final design of the new and exciting National Competency-based Apprenticeship System.

An Expert Panel, drawn broadly from the metalworking industry, has established the competencies that will be required as the baseline performance measures in the new System being developed by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) in partnership with the U. S. Department of Labor. Regional validation meetings are being held in Key metalworking states to secure input and discussion from the industry regarding these required (or core) competencies. The competencies may be viewed here.

Participating company representatives will have the opportunity to review and comment on each of the competencies being suggested for seven metalworking occupations. The results of the validations meetings will be critical in determining the final sets of core competencies.

Participants should have technical knowledge of the particular process and be able to represent their company's requirements for competent journey level workers. They should be from companies committed to apprenticeship training. Prior knowledge of the NIMS metalworking standards is helpful.

The occupations being covered under the new System are:

Machinist, Machining Specialist in CNC Milling l, Machining Specialist in CNC Lathe, Stamping Set-up and Operations, Tool and Die Maker, Mold Maker, Machine Builder, and Machine Maintenance, Service and Repair Specialist. Click here for Recommended Competencies

The validation sessions are being scheduled for Birmingham, AL; McAllen, Texas; Chicago, IL; Pittsburgh, PA; northeast Ohio; Los Angeles, CA and Manchester, NH, St. Louis, MO.

Participants are asked to attend one and only one of the sessions, which will be conducted from 9am until 3 pm Participants will be reimbursed for any travel-related expenses.
